Tax Returns 2025

The countdown for tax returns has begun - The process of submitting this year's tax returns will begin on March 15 and will be completed on July 15.

On March 15, 2025, the curtain opens for the 2025 tax returns with the AADE clarifying that no extensions will be granted. Moreover, the same happened with the road tax, which for the first time this year, there was no extension to a new date.

At the same time, in a television interview, the Governor of the AADE, Giorgos Pitsilis, confirmed that the submission period will last from March 15 with a deadline until July 15, 2025, clarifying that no extension will be granted.

Moreover, 1.4 million returns are expected to be submitted automatically - as was the case last year. Specifically, the AADE is expected to complete the clearance of tax returns for employees and pensioners by Holy Wednesday, April 16, 2025, and they will be fully pre-filled by the AADE. These returns will be ready and available for submission as early as the first day of submission on March 15, 2025.

What tax will certain categories be required to pay

The changes that will apply this year are not limited to the procedure but also extend to the tax that specific categories of citizens will be required to pay. These changes concern, among others, freelancers, employees who are paid by "block", taxpayers who have renovated real estate, owners of detached houses who have rented them out or made them available through Airbnb, as well as farmers with protected children.

In detail:

1. Taxpayers renovating their property: Taxpayers who renovate their property in 2024 can reduce their income tax by up to 3,200 euros for five years, with expenses of up to 16,000 euros. The benefit depends on the amount of the renovation expenses (e.g. for an expense of 10,000 euros, the relief reaches 2,000 euros per year).

2. Freelancers: The abolition of the business tax reduces the tax by 325 euros for all professionals. Especially for those operating in areas with a population of less than 1,500 inhabitants, the relief is even greater, as the imputed income is reduced by 50%.

3. Employees with a “block”: Employees with a “block” will benefit from a tax reduction of 400-500 euros due to the abolition of the business tax. This change will appear in the 2025 tax return.

4. Owners of closed houses: Those who rented out properties that were closed for three years will not pay tax on the rents of the last quarter of 2024, as long as the rental was made after September 8. The tax exemption is valid for 36 months.

5. Farmers with dependent children: Farmers with dependent children will see an increase in the tax-free amount by 1,000 euros, with the benefit reaching 240 euros per year for farmers with four or more children.
